Dominion: Angels Are Hot This Summer!

God's away so the Angels will play
During the season 2 premiere of SyFy's Defiance I was very impatient to see the series premiere of Dominion. And after weeks of waiting I was highly satisfied with the Pilot and see the series only getting more intense and horrifically enjoyable!

"We have to stop." -Michael
"Then stop." -Becca
Um how 'bout No

There was some flack from a few Christian circles but I expected that (zealots like to ruin everything) but everyone else was really into the show. Being a Supernatural fan I found the angels hating or loving humanity to be familiar but also loved that they took it a step further and had more of the "angel on human sex" subject (which was where the flack came from). I've asked other Supernatural fans about it and they feel the same so the producers should expect quite a few fans who love the CW's hit show. What got me a little shocked was that the stoic, lone warrior Archangel Michael likes to play Devil in the bedroom. He had just had an orgy but is very concerned about getting a woman pregnant. Angels don't use protection? Either way it seems that his brother Gabriel wasn't so concerned about that.

A shame he's against humanity,
he's very good looking

My jaw still hurts from hitting the floor after the last few minutes when Will Whele turns out to be Gabriel's son? Did I hear that right? And David Whele has no idea! For an archangel who hates humanity the idea of Gabriel actually sleeping with a human woman seems far fetched but we don't know the full details of the story yet. Further more on the sex subject I had to clean my ears to make sure I heard right that Arika, a female ambassador of Helena, was Queen Evelyn's wife! LGBT members will love that as do I. And her servant wasn't happy to see that Arika was having a sexual relationship with Whele. Hey some girls like variety in the bedroom. Arika seems the sensual adventurous type but she's a belladonna. She's beautiful but I can see that she likes to use that to her advantage so you never really know what she's thinking or what she really wants.

Hey maybe Arika was bored. A girl's gotta have variety
for her carnal appetites.
Moving off the sexual aspect of the show let's talk about the forbidden "Romeo-Juliet" romance between Alex Lannon and Claire Riesen. It seems that these two love birds are making plans but Destiny has other ideas and a love triangle with Will Whele who is in love with Claire (but she's too nice to break it to him that she's not into him). And apparently in a post-Apocalyptic world, humans have sort of regressed in the departments of women's rights. The caste system where you're only a number I expected (isn't that the case for most post-Apocalyptic settings where there's a class warfare on the horizon?) but the women's position in society was a curious thing. In Vega it's a against the law for male soldiers to be alone with women of social standing. Not sure if that just applies to Claire but it just adds to the forbidden fruit aspect of her romance. Then Arika offered Whele 500 (you heard right: 500) women of child bearing age as payment for a new energy source. So women are bartering chips now? Then in Helena, their children are not allowed to be seen. No idea the reason behind that law so I would love it if the writers would fill us in.

"Yep, I'm alive..." & then he dies dammit

But there is one city that seems to keep the idea of freedom alive: Delphi. Of course the creators would name all their cities after places of significance. Helena means "torch" or "light"; Vega (although a shortened name for Las Vegas) is Spanish for "fertile plain" or "water meadows"; and Delphi I can only assume was named for the Ancient Greek city where people would come far and wide to ask the Oracle (Apollo's oracle) questions about their futures. So Delphi would be a place of thought and learning surely. I hope we get to meet people from Delphi and see how they react to Vega's strict, totalitarian laws.

A saga isn't complete without a
couple of star crossed lovers in
the mix.

As far as characters go, I love the cast. Chris Egan's accent sort of slipped a few times but I really didn't care about that because his acting was great! Everyone was! I didn't think Tom Wisdom could just play his role of Michael so well. I was completely convinced in his performance. He captured Paul Bettany's character for the Archangel from the film Legion but also made it his own. I kind of wish we saw more of Carl Beukes as his character Gabriel this episode but I understand the need for set up and I loved how they introduced him: sitting on a throne in his dark fortress and waving a creepy hello to Michael through a lesser angel's eyes. It was chilling but very powerful in introducing Gabriel's crafty character. He's the kind of angel who is determined and wily. Michael and Alex need to watch out. And now the other higher angels who stayed out of the first war are getting involved. Not all of them but Gabriel has convinced enough of them to join his army so expect more human-like angels. I kind of hope that we see Raphael. He's another familiar angel known in many of the main religions.

She could tempt any Higher Angel for sure

Moving on to the other characters, I think I'm going to like Becca Thorn. She's strong but also has a gentle side. David Whele doesn't like her and I don't think the main reason is because she opposes him politically; she's also sleeping with Michael whom he doesn't fully trust. But I see that Becca loves Michael not just as a sexual partner but deeply cares for him so she won't let Whele's lewd comments to discourage her.

It's like finding out you're sleeping with someone famous!

Claire Riesen I hope toughens up. She has a naivety that is somewhat discouraging even though it's nice to have someone who has pure, selfless intentions in such politically active and dangerous surroundings. But that pure of heart trait will not fair well in such a hostile environment. Especially since she's now engaged to an Angel Sleeper Agent, Will Whele. And speaking of Whele, he surprised me too. That twist in the end was unexpected and I'm eager to see what he'll do next or his reasons behind his allegiance to Gabriel. Yeah he's Will's dad but he's gotta know that Gabriel is going to kill Claire and then probably him once he gets what he wants. And I have no idea what Will's going to do with Alex. For sure David sees Alex as a threat to his political aspirations. David's the kind of man who has lost his faith in God but he has incredible faith in himself to rise to the top. Then there's the benevolent, selfless leader General Edward Riesen. He reminds me of Julius Caesar a little. He refused a crown, preferring to keep his empire a democratic state (no monarchy) and Riesen wants the people to have a voice again. I absolutely agree with him even though Claire doesn't believe the people can govern themselves yet. Like I said, Claire's naivety needs to go.

A union between these 2 Houses may be for good or evil...

So why should you watch Dominion this summer? If you love romantic taboos, political intrigue, epic battles for Mankind's Fate, a fan of Post-Apocalyptic stories or even handsome looking warrior angels battling each other and getting laid by beautiful women in Vegas then you should definitely watch this series. Alex's strange tattoos gave him an ominous, cryptic message (supernatural messages always are): "Beware of those close to you." We know that's Will Whele but it could also mean everyone in his circle; we all do things we believe to be right and that could cause Alex problems as well as for the whole human race! Angels rain Hell on Earth this summer so I pray to the Savior that you are watching with me and other fans.

All hail Vega
