Supernatural: "Bloodlines" Has Potential

"Follow me into the Jungle..."

When I heard about Supernatural getting a spin-off I was very excited. First The Vampire Diaries gets The Originals now my other long time favorite show. I will say this, Bloodlines did have some weak points so I was a little disappointed but not entirely. Chicago is run by five monster families (I can never remember who the fifth is but it's Shape Shifters, Werewolves, Jinn, and Ghouls).

Monster on Monster violence

There were some characters that began to grow on me. The show has some strong female characters, which Supernatural likes to kill off every chance they get. Margo looks like she wears the pants of the monster mob Shape Shifter family. She is itching to start a war but with the prodigal son, David back home she may have to fight to stay on the throne. Then there's Violet. She seems timid because apparently werewolf females (called "bitches" which is what you call a female dog or wolf) are not so highly regarded. But I still see that Violet has a little she-wolf in her that will come out to kill.

Romeo-Juliet pairing please don't kill yourselves!

There was some 90210-esque feelings with the Romeo-Juliet pairing of Shape Shifter David and werewolf Violet but producers promise not to focus too much on that. Good thing because that's not what made Supernatural such a success. They will however be looking into the bromance of Ennis and David. Ennis is a new hunter, new to the game but it may be in his blood as we were left with a cliffhanger that maybe his father knew something about the monster mob families. Then there's David who seems to like humans. He ran away from home just so he could try and live a normal life. But don't think this bromance will be easy. There will be times when David and Ennis will clash but there will also be other times that they will come together. Since we find that one of the monster families may or may not have murdered an 8 year old boy, that will be something Ennis will always remember, which will help him keep a wall between him and David.

Male werewolves are such dicks

Bloodlines if picked up will promise to be completely different from its parent Supernatural. The Vampire Diaries spin off The Originals has promised the same and has delivered but that's different because Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah were so popular even before they left Mystic Falls for New Orleans where as these characters are completely new (except for Nathaniel Buzolic who played Kol on TVD but would now play shape shifter David). I heard the songs played on this back door Pilot and wonder if Bloodlines will be using new music or sticking to the old times music. I would really hate it if they changed that but it really depends on the music choices. I don't want Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus to be singing on the show. No pop music just stick to the emo stuff like Alternative Rock.

The prodigal son returns, slaughter a fat human!

Nathaniel Buzolic is a familiar face that may help draw in fans from other shows he played Kol on The Vampire Diaries and since his character was killed off (and made some appearances as a ghost) Supernatural fans would be happy to welcome him into the SPNFamily. Instead of having a cute British accent, Nathaniel will be speaking in an American accent, but that doesn't change the fact that he's cute and charming. His character Kol had sort of a psychotic impish aura while David still has that impish feel but he seems perfectly emotionally healthy. Well healthy by Supernatural standards that is. And besides it was David's snark that saved the episode. Classic Supernatural smart-assery that kept me watching.

"I'm standing right here, guys!"

Corrupt cops, mobsters, and underworld crime seems interesting to me and it takes place in Chicago. The city has always been associated with mob crime so it's fitting that it should be run by organized crime families even if they happen to have fangs and eat hearts. Supernatural takes place everywhere but with Bloodlines we focus on one town. The angels and demons won't really make an appearance on the show. Sam and Dean's saving the world problems will do little to affect Chicago, which I think is a good call. We want to focus on these characters in this setting and have it as separate from Supernatural as much as possible. And let's face it, the world can't revolve around Sam and Dean no matter how much we like to think that it does.

Ennis takes up the Hunter cause

There were some rocky parts. I won't deny that there are some definite growing pains to go through. Nevertheless I see potential here. Since I heard that Almost Human was cancelled (although fans and I still fight to get that overturned) it would be nice to see a show succeed. Bloodlines looks good to me and I think it can become great. There are many people who didn't like the backdoor Pilot; that it was last ditch attempt to attract a younger audience as a lot of Supernatural fans are all grown up (I'm only 25), but that's their opinion. I hope if the series does get picked up that the writers will find their voice after the first 3 episodes, which are critical when starting any new show. That being said I think there should be some major re-writes to fix all the problems I saw in the back door Pilot.

Ennis doesn't seem to listen when the Winchesters say, "Stay out of it."
