Revolution: Will the Monroes Rebuild the Republic?

Connor didn't inherit Bass's cut throat attitude...

I have been hearing some positive things about Revolution getting a renewal but nothing definite so I'll relax when I hear NBC give a press release. For now I'll speculate if Bass and his son, Connor will be able to rebuild the Monroe Republic.

Bass is always ready with a quip

Bass's family: his parents and two little sisters were gone with one drunk driver. He was a mess but Miles was there to pick up the pieces yet he has since then had this fear that he'll end up alone. Legitimate fear but Bass is such a self destructive person. When his girlfriend and their baby died in childbirth, Bass was again a mess. Instead of drinking his troubles away and contemplating suicide, Bass decided to raid the neighboring camp and he killed most of the people inhabiting that camp. Miles was completely shocked and feared for Connor Bennet's life. Miles hid Connor away from Bass, which was a good call I have to say. No kid should be exposed to a parent like Monroe.

We need Maury for this moment

But eventually Bass found out that he had a son from Emma. Suddenly Bass didn't feel so hopeless. There was this piece of him out there and he had a family again. We meet Connor and he's right hand man to some street thug in Mexico. Like Father, like son as Bass unwittingly pointed out that Connor was a punk with delusions of grandeur. Sound familiar, Bass? Well understandably Connor wanted nothing to do with his father but Bass was persistent. The first selfless act Monroe ever did was to let his son be the hero when Miles came to rescue him. Bass didn't run, but instead went back in his cage. He felt he had nothing else to give Connor until he realized there was something: the Monroe Republic.

Connor feels like he lost everything

Bass has this new vision about rebuilding the Monroe Republic and running it with his son like a kingdom. Of course I have some reservations about that. For one thing, Monroe was a ruthless, despotic dictator who killed a lot of people including those of his inner circle because of his paranoia. Second, Connor doesn't seem like the kind of guy to play second fiddle. He's not going to be Monroe's lap dog. Like Bass, Connor will do what he wants and he wants power. Connor was happy with his position in Mexico and his 30 men and Monroe is promising Connor more. I see great conflict here. Connor sees himself and Monroe as partners not father and son, which is how Bass hopes their relationship will end up eventually.

Not without my son

Bass and Connor are both ambitious people to certain degrees. Power means nothing to Bass unless he has someone to share it with. In season 1 we see that Bass never really cared about the Republic. The only thing he cared about was watching Miles's back. When Miles left, Monroe just spiraled out of control. Connor just wants power. He doesn't seem to be too concerned about who gives it to him but Connor also seems like a hopeful person. When he and Charlie had their little fling, he was stunned that Charlie was so hopeless. She didn't believe they could beat the Patriots, but Connor believes in what Monroe's selling him. Connor wants to be the top dog and I see the potential conflict there as Monroe already thinks of himself as the Alpha male of this Father/Son team.

People who ship Charloe will be disappointed...

Still I am hopeful that the Monroe boys can get along. In "Fear and Loathing", even though Connor was forced to face Bass in a cage fight to the death, he had some reservations. Even though Bass admitted to being the cause of Emma's death, in the ring Connor was still hesitant. Bass and Connor have some degree of loyalty to each other because they are blood. Monroe is the self sacrificing loyalty while Connor is the opposite. He lost his aunt and uncle and grew up in a gang run town where it was survival of the fittest. Yet Connor still has his humanity where as Bass doesn't have much. It's more a question if these two will be able to meet eye to eye on the important things or fall a part because of their different visions of power. For now they are loyal to each other, but how long will that last?
