Almost Human: Favorite Scenes: Straw Man

Our last case but hopefully not forever!
This is the final episode of Almost Human which is still a sad thing to say but it had a great ending. Hopefully one day fans will get a movie to tie up loose ends but God willing not in 10 years; let's try for in 5 years. There were a lot of scenes I liked in "Straw Man".

"Dorian flipped a van. It was pretty cool. Didn't know he
could do that."

           1. The episode was very meta in Dorian's review for whether or not he should be renewed and stay on the force. I loved watching Rudy, Maldonado, and John tell the review board all the good Dorian had done but most of all I loved hearing Dorian say how much he loved being a cop. He proved that he broke the mold while many DRNs fell under pressure, Dorian kept his cool because of his love in helping people. Not only is he made of titanium but his heart and will are too.

"You asked to see it."-Dorian
"I didn't ask! You showed it to me!"-John

         2. John and Dorian have been through so much that they can tease and poke at each other like brothers. John listed all the mistakes Dorian had done most importantly exposing himself in the car, which was hilarious! Just as Dorian had that sad look on his face thinking John really DID tell the board those things, John chuckles and said he was just messing with him.

The Straw Man strikes again

         3. It was mostly a John-centered episode as they worked John's father's old case. Before we didn't know much about his father only that he was a cop under investigation by I.A. John and Dorian go to visit Costa who was put away as a serial killer known as "Straw Man" but we find out that Edward felt he put away the wrong man and tried to make things right. I like this scene because for John it's a very enlightening moment into how he could clear his father's name and that Edward was such a great cop as well as a great person that he wanted to make up for his mistakes. Also I love watching John interrogate someone. He's got that steely look.

Foot fetish much?

          4. John manages to get his father's case file on the Straw Man but he tells Dorian he wants to do it alone. Their bond is so deep now that Dorian will do what John asks without asking why. Dorian also knows John so well as to give him his space when he really needs it.

John certainly took a beating but he always gets back up

          5. It was a very emotional scene for John. He didn't open the case file right away. John had this romanticized image of his dad and I think he was afraid of what he might find in the file that would ruin that and he would have to relive his father's death by opening something from Edward's life. But John dove right in because he knew that's what his dad would have done.

That was a tasty demonstration

          6. I loved Rudy's cup cake demonstration. It was a tasty one. Rudy had so many curious things in his lab that I wish we got to see more of.

Poor Paul got stuck playing the hobo... again

          7. This was the second time Paul was stuck playing the hobo. He said it would be the last time (don't remind me of the irony of that statement). We all saw how Paul and John didn't get along but we know Paul was a good cop. Paul ran into a homeless kid and they started joking around (nothing like a "yo mama" joke between strangers). Paul even gave the kid some money to find a better place to sleep that night.

Who wouldn't want Dorian serenading the with Lionel Richie

         8. When Dorian sang Lionel Richie I couldn't help but smile but what I loved most about John and Dorian in the car was how John talked about his dad and how he made John want to be a cop. Forget Super Man, Edward Kennex was John's hero. I loved the passion in his voice and then he said with conviction that without a doubt John knew his father wasn't a dirty cop.

You closed your dad's case, John. Great job!

        9. John and Maldonado had such a close relationship that they could talk about anything. She congratulated John on closing his dad's case and we saw John have some closure. He can now prove to everyone that his dad was a good cop who wasn't corrupt.

Usually "call backs" with electronics isn't good but in this
case it was.

        10. Dorian got his call back and started acting like an MX, but I loved how the interviewer was not impressed by that. He wanted Dorian to be himself because that's what the board liked about him. Because Dorian was himself, the department was closing more cases than before so they were convinced that having at least one DRN was good for the force.

A farewell gift? Nooooooo!

         11. The closing scene was my all time favorite: John and Dorian at the noodle bar. John is a modest guy but Dorian couldn't help but show how much it meant to him that John gave Dorian a stunning review. John's dad made him want to be a cop but it was Dorian that made John want to stay a cop. Then Dorian gave John a new synthetic leg that was better than his old model; it didn't even hit the market yet! I had no idea that Dorian could cry but he got a little misty: "I was made to feel, John." Dorian knew he could never replace John's human partner but he was glad that Maldonado put them together. So are we! Then there was that wonderful ending with John and Dorian going back to work and John going back for his new leg. It really showed that John was over his hatred of synthetics.

Dorian made me cry in a good way

While the show didn't end on a cliffhanger it was a shame that FOX cancelled the show. Kevin Reilly green lighted it but because of Warner Bros.'s refusal to negotiate a better price, FOX shut it down. My advice to fans is this: networks care only about profit so if Humaniacs want to get their show back whether on the small screen or the big screen, they need to show that Almost Human is profitable. Buying the DVD set helps immensely and also keeping the show alive for others by talking about it, giving it stunning reviews on Netflix and IMDb.com will help. I hope everyday that we get a movie to tie up all those loose ends: EnSyndicate, the Wall, Anna, Dr. Vaughn, etc. I treasure this show and I don't say that very often. To me a show isn't successful by how many episodes it has but by how much fans love it and that they're willing to fight for it. This is one of those shows.
