The Originals: "Reigning Pain In New Orleans" Thoughts

Warning: CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!

A toast to a hostile take over well done

Well The Originals has made some amazing progress this year, but who would have doubted that it would be a success? Not me! The break out hit aired it's mid-season finale and we won't see our favorite blood suckers until January 14, 2014. There were many amazing discoveries last episode and here's what I thought of "Reigning Pain In New Orleans."

One of those Sunday dinners that may get bloody

Last episode, Klaus was ambushed by Marcel's posse with Rebekah at Marcel's side. Yet the attack didn't turn out how Rebekah would have hoped so instead she encouraged Marcel to submit and now Klaus is in charge and reigns his new kingdom from his old French Quarter home with Hayley while he banished his siblings to the plantation.

His demon seed & her Devil'd eggs I'm nervous what that kid will be

Klaus tries to establish a new order in the French Quarter and Klaus is not nothing if not bloody. The Human Faction has so far asserted that they and not the vampires are the real power. With Marcel it was an easy peace but Klaus doesn't want just a piece of the pie, but he wants the whole pie and the cake. He asserts that he was in charge and that if the Human Faction was smart, they'd take whatever scraps Klaus gives them. The Human Faction retaliates at the vampires' usual hang out bar and now Marcel is prompted to step in and help Klaus put these humans in their place. Nothing like a massacre to patch up a friendship.

Stop! Drop! & Roll!

Meanwhile, as Klaus declared open season on the werewolves in the bayou, Hayley is in great fear for the remnants of her werewolf kin and so asks Elijah and Rebekah to protect the wolves while she tries to find a way to break the curse on werewolves placed by Marcel so that they are in their wolf forms until full moon when they take human form. Of course, Elijah is ready to do as Hayley asks but Rebekah has more reservations, yet she helps her new bestie anyway. Diego, one of Marcel's posse, is leading a hunting party but Elijah and Rebekah disrupt the fun. I just love Elijah assert authority. He just does it with his usual cool, smooth criminal savvy and he's not even in a suit! Rebekah proves to be a Haylejah shipper as she knows Elijah is doing all this not just to protect Hayley but because he deeply cares about her. Elijah may claim that it's complicated but it isn't. This is one of the few times I hate Klaus with all his insecurities because they are disrupting Elijah's love life. But back to the bayou, Elijah and Rebekah save a werewolf from Diego's hunting party and find the werewolf wearing a ring that resembles the one Esther used to wear.

Davina gets a change of scenery. Marcel still hasn't told her that the last witch elder is dead, which will come back to bite him in the ass. Cami is still leaving herself notes around her apartment (how does she do that without Klaus noticing?). She is rather tenacious and her uncle Kieran also still hasn't told Cami about what's going on. The men on this show sure love to keep secrets from the women. Cami confronts Klaus who reveals that to know him is to suffer. Even after he showed Cami his painful past she wasn't afraid. Instead she said, "No one should have to go through that." She's the best ain't she? And is it sacrilege that even though I'm a Klaroline shipper that I wanted Cami and Klaus to kiss at that very moment? Oh well.

Don't touch the hair, bitch!

Klaus and Hayley are back on the outs as she's pissed that he ordered a kill order on her remaining family. Klaus claims that he did it because the vampires were nervous and would have killed her instead. Klaus has a habit of doing bad things with good intentions, but Hayley swore that she'd pay him back in full for his violence. So Hayley enlists the help of teenage witch, Davina. She tells Davina that Agnes is dead but being that Davina is loyal to Marcel she calls Hayley a liar. However, her new bestie Josh backs Hayley up which upsets Davina. So Davina goes to Cami's apartment as she is packing up to leave and she I love the way Davina just waltzes in and starts to casually almost literally blow Cami's mind.

"You never paid for anything in your life"

Elijah and Rebekah tell a sullen Klaus that he's a part of some messiah-like prophecy of the werewolves. Apparently his biological father was a pretty important guy, a werewolf chieftain who slept with the Original Witch and the child of that union would be both vampire and werewolf. So as it turns out the wolves in the bayou are descendants of his real father. You would think for a guy who's big on family loyalty would be overjoyed but instead he just blows it off. Still Klaus can be sentimental. He asks Kieran to protect the werewolves but make sure vampires don't find out that Klaus asked him to do so.

A drink between mates solves any problem

Marcel and Klaus patch up their friendship. Klaus usually takes 1 step forward but then 5 steps back on the journey to emotional health and today he took a big leap forward with making up with his old Partner in Crime. Klaus opens up and reveals the original reason he wanted to take Marcel's kingdom away but now he wants to protect his unborn child and be a better father than Mikael. That sounds really progressive for Klaus. So Klaus also says that he knows people don't like him but they like Marcel. The Hybrid Bad Boy asks his old protege to be his equal in ruling New Orleans. Marcel agrees but this is bad news for Bex. Once again Marcel has chosen Klaus over her. Poor Rebekah! Matt was the only good one she chose and I bet she's regretting leaving him behind, but Rebekah will find a way to console herself. Especially as it turns out she has something on Marcel that's so heinous that no amount of pleading or alcohol will make Klaus forgive him. What does it mean? Did Marcel lure Mikael to New Orleans? It would explain why he's alive.

Please kiss already!

On a happy note, Elijah and Klaus make up and Klaus allows his siblings to move back into their old French Quarter home. That moment on the balcony with Hayley and Elijah was so electric! I thought they would kiss but Elijah chickens out! Dammit Elijah sure knows how to tease a girl! On a dark note, however, it seems Hayley may have joined forces with Davina and what Hayley wants is for Davina to remove the curse on her werewolf family. Davina is more concerned with getting vengeance on the witches as clips from next year's episode shows. Will she get it?

Take a left at the dead tree & you should find it no problem

I thought the episode was explosive! Klaus always likes to show his authority through bloody displays, but we all knew that was coming. Klaus hates being told what to do and he may be willing to temporarily do that for a friend like Marcel, he's definitely not going to do that for a bunch of greedy humans. I loved how Rebekah points out the flaws in the logic of her brothers and her secret Romeo. She seems to be the only girl who has common sense. Elijah without his suit is still a hot vampire who exudes dominance. Hayley is a tough wolf mama who refuses to play damsel in distress. I know Klaus didn't answer her question as to what would happen to her after the baby's born, but it's still early and I think Klaus has grown fond of Hayley; if not in a romantic way then at least in a partner kind of way: someone who's like him in a way. Klaus makes some strides in opening up emotionally to someone and doing something unselfish by letting Cami go. He kept her around because he liked having someone point out his flaws and be honest with him. Klaus also didn't kill her Uncle Kieran out of respect for her. Still I think Kieran is the only human who didn't underestimate Klaus and his violent reputation. Kieran likes to keep the peace and he's willing to deal with the Devil, as he said, to keep his loved ones safe.

Amazing episode! I wish we didn't have to wait so long for a new one but I'll console myself with re-runs! Thank God for Amazon, Hulu, and cwtv.com.
