Almost Human: "Unbound" Review

Just another day at the office.

Whoa! "Unbound" was certainly an adrenaline rush for sure. Not only did we meet Dorian's creator but we also found out a little about this Wall everyone's so afraid of.

Probably one of the nicest off the grid, suspicious labs we've seen.

Well it's not an Almost Human episode without some light humor. John and Dorian play tour guides on a class field trip with Dorian being that helpful recording box while John is the smart ass kid too cool for school field trips who makes snide remarks. So John sought to give these kids some real insight into what happens to bad guys. John scared these kids so straight that one of them puked! Hope Maldonado doesn't get those kids' therapy bills. Of course John shrugs it off calling the kids: "Bed wetters". I guess John was chewing coffee grounds and being morose at age 11.

How could no one notice all those grenades bulging under her white coat?

I think the police force has gotten more on the ball in the future. A woman gets her purse snatched and is murdered by the mugger then a whole posse comes to take down the criminal. Then they locked the robot into evidence but low and behold, this bot rises from the dead and takes the android head from the "Pilot" episode. So this Sarah Conner Terminated her way out of the evidence lock up.

"Here's my invitation, bitches"

She's a soldier robot, or XRN named Danica who can be quite trigger happy. I'm glad I wasn't that cab driver she shot and placed in her trunk. But I think like the DRNs, Danica has some human emotion in there somewhere as she traded in her current body for a new sexy one from a scrapped sex-bot. A female robot in fish nets and carrying an AK-47? That should boost ratings from the male side of the spectrum. Yet there was also that moment in the cab when Danica was about to waste a pushy mother and her cute ballerina. All the little girl said was, "I think you're really pretty." Danica stops and as the two leave the cab, she smiles a little bit. Maybe she's bi-polar. Anyway, like Vaughn said, Danica is more complex. She talked about her "sacrifice being necessary". What does that mean?

Everyone's got to eat, John, even Dr. Frankenstein

Meanwhile, it's a family reunion for Dorian who meets his "father", Dr. Vaughn. Dorian seemed really in awe of his creator. Who wouldn't be? It's like if a man met God. Yet Dr. Vaughn didn't seem like some ambitious scientist. He's a DaVinci of the future who puts his heart and soul into his creations. When he made DRNs, Vaughn was in a good place while with the XRN, he was in a very, VERY dark place. Even Rudy was being more awkward than usual. But that was so cute and why we love Rudy.

One of "Frankenstein's" best creations.

Dorian and John's best scenes are when they have vulnerable and personal conversations. They seemed closer in this episode, going up another step in their deep bond. When Dorian expressed his fear in becoming like Danica (as Vaughn said he didn't do anything different on her than he did on the DRNs), John said that Dorian was never going to be like that. I think Dorian and Danica are two sides of the same coin with Dorian being good with the potential for becoming bad and Danica being bad with some potential in becoming good. This made Dorian more determined to beat her as it would be metaphorical way of defeating his possible darkness.

XRN and DRN throw down

The action in this episode was off the charts! Explosions and gunfire. It's not the future unless you have one killer robot on the loose. John wasn't scared of that. The only thing that probably caused him some worry was that he had to jab some electric needle in the back of the homicidal robot's neck. Come on, John, think of it as riding a bike; the bike in this scenario being a homicidal bitch made of metal. What I love about John Kennex is that despite his hard exterior and occasional complaints about danger, he charges head first into the fray. Even though he was clearly out matched by Danica, John still managed to pull himself up and go two rounds with her. The second round ending with a bang as John took the pin out of one of Danica's grenade.

Picture says: "Excuse me, ma'am. Hold still a sec..."

However, the most shocking part of the episode had to be the reveal that the reserved yet emotionally fragile Dr. Vaughn was the architect behind the whole thing. Poor Dorian! To find out that your maker is a disappointment. It's like meeting God but he turns out to be a dick. It turns out, Vaughn was grabbing some supplies before he left town so that he could continue his work on his XRNs, using his synthetic souls and a few mother boards to build an army of 500 Danicas!
Everyone has the ONE disappointing parent, Dorian.

We also got to learn more about the Wall. Something must have happened to make everyone so scared that they'd wet themselves at the mere thought of someone going over it. We still don't know what happened to make the city put up a wall but it seems that there are still some if any people on the other side who the police don't want over on their side. There was also a mention of a New Tokyo I believe. My theory is there was some huge catastrophe like a World War 3 that nearly devastated the planet. Whatever the theory, Vaughn may know some people over the wall and it's clear he has some plans that will cause chaos for all.

Always the quiet ones who go crazy and cause a mess.
So I hear we won't have anymore hiatuses. I do hope FOX station renews this show. It has so much potential and Wyman already said he had a 5 season plan for it. Hopefully we fans can help him with that goal!
