Farewell to our last hero. He was one of the best! |
Well we've come to our last character journey and it's been a fun ride. If you're wondering about Danny's character journey he only lasted 10-11 episodes so it wasn't enough to get a deeper into his character. Jason Neville on the other hand I think we've seen deep enough to know he is as an all round human being. And as a human being, Jason was probably the most moral by far.
Dad just got scary |
Little Jason so cute! |
Jason was old enough to remember when the lights went out. He was living in a loving home with loving parents until the Blackout happened then Jason saw his father rapidly change. We wondered why Jason stayed with his dad so long if he didn't always agree with his brutal violent methods. I would like to think it was because Jason felt he had no choice. Jason remembered the good man his father once was. Tom instilled in Jason that idea: "We hit the bag, we don't hit people." Then all of a sudden Tom started teaching Jason how to defend himself by hurting other people, which was in direct opposite of what Tom was teaching him. I think Jason somehow found a balance between the two lessons. When we first meet Jason he pretends to be someone else. After we found out that he was spying for the Monroe Militia we started to not like him and see him as the enemy. That was until he had a chance to kill Charlie but didn't. He saw that a soldier was going to hurt her so he took a big risk in saving her life. We saw right there that Jason had feelings for Charlie. Actually we saw a lot how Jason allowed his heart to govern his actions even though it was tactually stupid. I mean, Charlie tricked Jason with a numb ankle (figures, girl "breaks" her ankle while running away so guy tries to save her) then she hand cuffed him to a pay phone. Then Jason bribed a stable hand on information to where Charlie was and suffered greatly at the hands of Monroe.
Welcome home, Jason |
But it was Jason's heart that made him see what was right and wrong and he stood up to his father over how he used the power they had to slaughter the rebels along with their families. Of course this lead to a violent altercation with his dad who promptly disowned him after that. Jason's only option was to join the rebels to help make up for the horrible things he had done in Monroe's name. Although there was one time where even though it would probably be the death of his mother, Jason helped the rebels get information out of Tom. Jason loved his mother we know because he punched Miles square in the jaw for holding a sword to his mother's throat. But I guess Jason figured his parents smart and quick enough to bail and get out of Philadelphia before Monroe caught wind of anything.
You never forget your first love |
Being away from his scheming ambitious parents allowed Jason more time to spend with Charlie. They were both children of complicated families and had rough relationships with their parents so they sort of gravitated toward each other. Yet no matter how much you may disagree with your parent or hate them for their crimes, they're still your parents and you'll always find it in your heart to forgive them. Jason sort of forgave his dad, helping him with the coup and all.
Awww they were so cute |
Daddy's a mess, time for Jason to use some tough love on the old man. |
Then in season 2, Jason was forcibly separated from Charlie. He could have tried to find her but he saw that his father was falling apart with the notion that Julia had died in the bombings. Jason had to become Tom's rock for the time being. Tom was even ready to end it all and put a bullet in his head. However, Jason used Tom's own "tough love" method to snap him out of his depression. Then for an extra push (from Fate) Tom settled on revenge. Jason again could have left his father to his evil devices (such as killing an innocent man in order to get in with the Patriots to kill them all) but Jason was a man of duty I suppose you can say. Family comes first.
A bit Oedipus don't you agree? |
The Neville boys were really tested when Jason was brain washed by the Patriots. Tom managed to get Jason to snap out of his drugged induced psychosis, but Jason never felt the same again. By now you'd think that Jason would leave. He could have especially left after they found out Julia was alive but Jason stuck around. I think by that point Jason felt like he had no where else to go. Also other things like: he had no idea where Charlie was, he didn't trust the Patriots (seeing them as the Evil Galactic Empire), and most importantly I don't think Jason trusted himself. He could still feel the effects of the Patriots' brain washing regiment affecting him. Despite his parents' continued desire to climb to the top by ruthless means, Jason still believed in the bigger picture. He hated at what the Patriots were doing and this time it didn't take too long for Jason to finally quit his father for good.
"Heeeeere's Jason" |
Although Jason's end was tragic and he died a monster of the Patriots' making, he still proved to be a loyal son, a generous heart, and an all around noble character. Tom should have been proud that his son turned out to be such a great person; a hero in fact as his information from inside the machine helped our heroes keep at least one step ahead of the Patriots. Jason was one of the few characters who had a moral compass that was constantly in the right direction even though there were times when he ignored it. Still Jason would realize quickly when things got too far and try with all his might to fix what he broke. If there had been a season 3 we would have seen Jason's ghost being used for evil purposes so in that respect I'm glad Revolution ended the way it did. It keeps Jason's somewhat saintly image intact for us.
"You know in Mexico they'd just call this a stand off." |
I do hope that someone somewhere sees the value in our beloved show that ended after just 2 seasons when there was so much more story to tell. But until then Revolution's end was a nice character wrap up and the characters are what made the show such an inspiration to millions of Revolution fans around the globe. Hopefully the lights will be turned back on for our heroes one day.
